What types of the files FSA is generally able to scan? In pop-up list there are a few default file masks, doc, pdf etc. Should it mean that FSA can find only text files?

Not such a simple thing... Generally you are able to scan any of types of files (All files(*.*) in pop-up list); also you may select All folders(*), but in this case Files Search Assistant will search for folders with certain file mask, and you will not be able to search for text.
All the file masks in the list can be customized. Let's suppose you would search for Web pages. As we know they may have extensions as follows: *ht*(s/phtml, htm, mht etc); php*(php3,4 etc); asp; pl; cgi etc - you can add these masks in FSA's Filter Editor. Enter keyword(s) you'd like to search for and press Search. In the list you will see files found according to your criteria. Of course, all these files are of ASCII type(text) and you can see them in Preview Pane. But there are files of type BIN(binary).
Thus if you will search for binary files, FSA CAN find them. But remember, you will not be able to see them in Preview Pane properly, as they contain binary code(but you will see keywords you had been searching for).
