This is FSA main menu. The most useful option is in Search Results menu. Find there Generate Report command this option generates easy readable search report. Find below how does FSA search report look like or read everything about search reports in FSA.
Specify common search parameters: location to search in, keywords to search and file mask. If you need to repeat the same search parameters, then consider using custom search parameters.
Common search options
File Search Assistant - common search options. Specify if the search should be case sensitive, in FSA should search files and search text in ZIP files, if you want to search within found search results, if the new search results should be appended to current results. Min relevance level is used when you are searching regular expressions. Dynamic index update allows to update files within index dynamically, when you are working with indexed files. Search by date
If you need to find file by date, then use "Date" settings tag. Check "Search by date" checkbox and specify necessary date parameters, such as creation or modification date. More over, with FSA you can specify exact time to search this is useful, when you performed some operation automatically (for instance text replacing) and now need to get these very files.
Search by size
Finding files by size is also easy. Check "search by size" checkbox. And then specify search parameters for size. With FSA you can specify the exact file size, it's useful when the same file was just renamed and you need to find both copies of files.
You can search files in various locations at the same time. You can search local hard disk or search network folder. Use "Add folder" button to add one more search path. Check "Scan folders recursive" to tell FSA to search for files and text in subfolders.
FSA can search text within popular file formats, such as Word, Excel, HTML and Adobe Acrobat PDF files. For this purpose converters where implemented into FSA. If you need to search for converted text the check converter's checkbox. If you need to search in document as-is, for instance to do search in html document, disable converter. Finally, if you searching is password protected files, then you can tell FSA your passwords, so that program will automatically apply your password to open file for search.
This is how FSA "Password manager" looks like. You can specify as many password as you wish, and FSA will try all of them when file is protected with password. Finally, you will be able to search text even in protected files. FSA keeps passwords in secure place, so it will not be possible to recover them from FSA. File search quoting options
FSA has a great function, it can preview your search results, so when you are searching for certain text in certain context you will not need to open each file, you will see file text in preview. The quoting options determines the number of characters and lines to quote.
File search results include the name and location of located file. The right column is the most useful as it tells how many hits you have for every file. If you are searching using regular expressions, then pay attention to Relevance column.

FSA preview pane search the quotation from file and highlight the found text. Using the buttons you can navigate between fragments.

Create index, search file in index - find some screenshots below
The "Search index..." and "Search disk" options in File menu allows to switch FSA between searching file and text in index files or searching directly within hard disk. Read more about searching for file in index.
When creating index you can select to option - index may contain full paths or relative paths to files. Read more about file indexing.
