Find
text in password protected files
With
File Search Assistant you can search for text in password protected
Word and Excel files. It's handy when due to security needs you store
files as password protected, but need to be able to search and find
text in these files.
Introduction
Due to security
needs we often keep important information as a password protected
file. We have a lot of sensitive files that contain an information
locked using password protection.
We can store
information in password protected:
- MS Word
(.doc) files;
- MS Excel
(.xls) files;
Search
for text in password protected files
The problem is that Windows or other search tool cannot search text
in password protected file as they don't know the password used and
don't have means to specify this password.
With File Search Assistant you can specify some typical passwords,
so FSA will try to use this password to open password protected files.
Practice
of searching password protected files
Using File Search Assistant
Run File Search Assistant and go to the "Text filters"
tag. Click "Password manager" button. Now, you can specify
some passwords that FSA will try to open password protected files.
Click "+" button to add some new password.
Possible security problems
It's important that you understand the security risks you have.
File Search Assistant keeps your passwords protected under the strong
password, but it's still possible to "crack" this file and
find out your passwords. So, if you need to stay top-secured, then
remove passwords from FSA password list after the search.
